Peacefully located in a remote valley with versatile space suited to a range of uses

The retreat centre is at Ulpha Old School, in the Duddon valley, one of the most picturesque and unspoilt areas of the Lake District.  The building skirts the Dunnerdale fells at Ulpha bridge, three miles along the valley from Duddon bridge on the A595.

The surrounding fells and the valley itself, with the river Duddon winding through, give a splendid backdrop. The vistas are stunning and makes this a perfect setting, as unique as it is inspiring.

Duddon Valley Retreat is suitable for a range of group activities, such as Art/drawing weekends, craft classes, music workshops, educational and lecture meetings, and for groups to use as a daytime base whilst exploring the local area.

Ulpha Old School

Originally built as the local primary school, the building has been re-purposed, retaining many of its original features. The main school hall remains, with the staff and kitchen areas adapted to new use.

The school was originally built in the mid-nineteenth century and was the local primary school until it closed in 1999. It has since been given a makeover, with a modern heating system and up-to-date fittings and insulation.

The village of Ulpha sits between the river Duddon and surrounding fells, consisting of stone-built farmhouses and cottages along the small valley road.

Hiring the Venue

The main school hall is a large flexible space that lends itself to a variety of uses.

It can be set out in a formal way, with chairs, tables or desks, or informally, with cushions or mats.

It can be used as an open space, with the tools and equipment needed for a practical activity, or set out with display boards as an exhibition space.

Alternatively, due to its L-shape it can be divided into distinct areas.

On one occasion a funeral service was held here.

It’s suitable for a range of other purposes, including Art/drawing weekend, music workshop, educational and lecture hall, group bonding as a base whilst using the local area, and many others.

The Old School can be booked for your event just a day, over a weekend, or for a course or retreat over a longer period. It's primarily suitable for small groups , although for a short one-day or weekend event, or  it can accommodate a larger number.

We're mindful of the quiet nature of this rural community and the agreed use will need to be well-organised and sensitive to that.

Previous Events

This versatile venue has hosted everything from heartfelt gatherings, to vibrant

creative retreats, music workshops, and educational sessions.

Previous events that have taken place include teaching courses such as calligraphy, yoga and meditation, practical workshops such as stone carving, willow weaving and drum making, and therapeutic courses such as ‘family constellations’.

The Old School and garden was previously a permaculture centre, and teaching courses were held here.  Foraging courses have also been held, the local area being ideal for this, with the hall used to identify and classify fungi collected during the foraging fieldwork.

The hall is suitable for more formal events, such as lectures and educational classes, and on one occasion a humanist funeral was held here, with a large local gathering
